Should I print digital or offset?

Compare digital and offset printing side by side to find the right fit for your project.

Choosing between digital and offset printing comes down to three things: quantity, timeline, and quality requirements. Both produce professional results, but each has a clear advantage depending on where your project falls on those variables. Use the comparison tool below to evaluate your options based on your specific specs.

How digital and offset printing differ
Digital printing transfers ink or toner directly to the page without the need for printing plates. There's no makeready process, which means setup is fast and cost per unit is consistent regardless of quantity. Digital is ideal for shorter runs, faster turnarounds, and projects that require variable data or frequent version changes.

Offset printing uses plates to transfer ink to a rubber blanket and then to the page. There's a higher upfront setup cost due to plate making and makeready, but per-unit cost drops significantly at higher quantities. Offset also offers a broader range of paper stocks, ink options, and the most consistent, repeatable color output for long runs.

When digital makes sense

  • Run lengths under [X] copies
  • Tight turnaround requirements
  • Frequent title updates or version changes
  • Short-run reprints between larger offset runs

When offset makes sense

  • Run lengths above [X] copies
  • Projects where per-unit cost is a priority
  • Long-run educational or curriculum titles with stable content
  • Projects requiring the broadest range of paper and finishing options
