How do I build a perfect bound cover file?

Building a perfect bound cover file requires precise measurements; your front cover, spine, and back cover must be laid out as a single flat file with the correct dimensions for your specific page count and paper stock. What the template does
The template is a fillable PDF that calculates your cover dimensions, including spine width, automatically once you enter your page count, paper stock, and trim size. It outputs the exact flat file dimensions you need to build your cover in your design application, with bleed and safe zones already accounted for.

What you'll need before you start
Before opening the template, have the following confirmed:

• Final or near-final page count
• Trim size (width × height)
• PPI (pages per inch) for your paper stock - contact B&B if you don't have this

If your page count isn't locked yet, use your best estimate and you can re-run the template once pages are finalized and check whether your spine width has shifted enough to require a cover adjustment.

How to use the template

1. Download the perfect bound cover layout template below
2. Open it in Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader — do not open in a browser or third-party PDF viewer, as the auto-calculating fields require Acrobat to function correctly
3. Enter your trim size, page count, and paper stock in the fields provided
4. The template will calculate your spine width and overall flat cover dimensions automatically
5. Use the output dimensions to set up your cover document in your design application
6. Build your cover art within the indicated boundaries, keeping critical content within the safe zone and extending background elements to the bleed edge

Setting up your cover file
Once you have your dimensions from the template, set up a new document in your design application at the calculated flat cover size. Your document should include:

• 0.125" bleed on all outer edges
• Spine panel at the calculated width, centered on the flat file
• Critical content (title, author name, barcode, spine text) kept within the safe zone, at least 0.125" inside all trim and spine fold lines
